LOCATION, CLIMATE, POPULATION AND WATER. Rusinga Island is in Lake Victoria; at 69,000sq Km this is the second largest mass of freshwater in the world after (Lake Superior in America). The water surface is 1,133 m to 1,134 m (3,720ft) above sea level and the Island is less than 100 km south of the Equator.
The above combination makes it a very pleasant and stable climate all the year round; daily metrological temperatures usually ranges between 20⁰C to 30⁰C and the Lake provide the expected humidity for the air; even during the dry spells.
It is really hard to define or imagine a particular weather: this why; only defined in long and short rainy seasons. Its temperate climate makes it a viable destination all the year round. The generally sunny, hot and evenings clear and warm. It is all pleasure to explore it by boat, vehicle, or walking. There is a causeway connecting the island with the mainland, it is possible to drive all the way from Nairobi or come through Kisumu cross by ferry from Lwanda (Naya). However most visitors on safaris come to Rusinga by air, there is a small airstrip for small planes owned by Rusinga Island lodge.
